This is the first of a series of images taken of fields around Pomeroy, Washington, in late July 1999. Don Kirby>invited several photographers to join him at Central Ferry to photograph the region. Give him an e-mail ring to learn about his workshop in the same area this summer (2000).

I hope in the future to show some of Kirby's images here, but he's near impossible to get a hold of to get permission. The images I do have are copyrighted, so . . . Stay tuned!

I took this with Tri-X film, red filter in the middle of a sweltering (100+ degrees) afternoon. There were no clouds, so I kept the horizon to a minimal. The challenge with these photos is the piles of cut grass appear to be in contrast with the surround area. But they actually are less than a stop difference.

Don handles the problem of creating contrast by using Tech Pan film. I won't get into how he develops his film and such, but when you expose and develop this film a certain way you can increase contrast, so much so that you can create a near-Kodalith affect.

I discovered this image while tooling the hills north of Pomeroy with Pat Morrissey. I was taken with how the cut grass stretched towards the bottom of the frame, much like fingers. But it's also fun to search for fields were the rows create an almost moiré affect.

There's no great philosophical reason for photographing the fields. They just create nice textured images. And, except for this one weekend, never draw a crowd.
